Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art

Welcome to The Gallery of Modern Art

Gallery of Modern Art

The Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow in the second most visited contemporary art gallery outside of London. Based in the contemporary Royal Exchange Square, just off Queen Street, displaying work by international and local artists as well as addressing contemporary social issues through its major annual projects. Based in the heart of the city centre it is housed in a large, elegant building, it was refurbished to house the city's contemporary art collections specifically and is an appealing combination of old and new architecture.

Opening in 1996 it has seen over seven million visitors over the years, the Gallery continues to grow and evolve continuing to develop and attract new audiences. Set over four floors the Gallery holds contemporary and post modern art, these are named after the four natural elements, Fire, Water, Earth and Air. With the rooftop café now dedicated to Education and Access studios, workshops and artists come along for talks, which appeal to anyone from 8 to 80! There is also a learning library now at home in the basement, with café, Internet access, general book-lending and multimedia and art.

The library also holds a huge resource of books and information on art and artists. As well as holding a series of events, the library has a training suite both for hire and for general public use; PCs for use by the public on a drop-in basis; a fax machine and photocopying facility.

The building is the former home of one of Glasgow's richest tobacco lords - William Cunninghame - who built the mansion in 1778. As the area changed from residential to business it was then sold on the Royal Bank of Scotland and then to Glasgow magistrates who transformed it into the Royal Exchange.

Duke of Wellington StatueGlasgow's Duke of Wellington statue also stands proudly in front of the Gallery of Modern Art; the statue was erected in 1844. The Duke of Wellington was the conqueror of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, After World War II, the building served as a library before being renovated as an art gallery in the 1990's. And aren't we lucky that it was? The Gallery of Modern Art is a great day out for everyone in the family, as well as fantastic art work there are workshops for children and much more it is a must see for anyone visiting Glasgow.
